Adobe has launched, recently, the new line of CS3 products that includes a brand new version of Photoshop.
The first thing that must be said is that Adobe splitted Photoshop in two new products: Photoshop CS3 standard and Photoshop CS3 Extended.
Photoshop CS3 Extended - the most powerful version among the two - has now the ability to manipulate movies. The user can now paint on movies or restore them. Here is a list of the other new features:
* Smart Filters - now you can deal with filters in a non-destructive way, something like what is done in After Effects;
* Quick Selection and Refine Edge tools - allow one to refine the edges of lassos - a must if you deal with chroma key or matte creations;
* Advanced compositing - identifies and alighn layers in a powerful and simple way;
* 3D compositing and texture editing - now you can import and manipulate 3DS, OBJ, U3D, KMZ or COLLADA 3D objects on your compositions;
* 2D and 3D measurement tools - these new functions allow measurement of sizes or angles, scale definition, element counting, area calculation and other cientific or statistical functions;
* Streamlined interface - Photoshop CS3 brings a new interface with more free screen space to work;
* Better raw-image processing - better manipulation of RAW images;
* Enhanced Vanishing Point with 3D support - Vanish Point is now 3D!
* Enhanced 32-bit HDR support - enhanced support for 32-bit HDR images.
As you can see, the news are exciting.
Despite of that, I see that some things still need to improve. As I have suggested to Adobe during the beta program, here is a list of what I would like to see in future versions of Photoshop:
* A way to apply a filter, adjustment or whatever to several layers or images at the same time;
* A kind of “spotlight”-like feature that allows one to search/select/delete for a layer, group, etc., by name;
* The transformation of Photoshop from modal to non-modal. Alert windows could be replaced by something like what is done in Alias Maya, i.e, instead of showing an alert window with an error or warning, could be created a box in the bottom, to show and log all the messages;
* Why have we to wait until a filter is applied to an image or layer? Why Photoshop can’t do it as a background task, allowing the user to continue working?
These are some of the hundreds of features I would like to see in the next version of Photoshop. I wish Santa can bring them to me!
