Mac OS X has a special directory called Movies, located on the main disk, designed to store all the movies of any specific user. The problem is that if one uses that directory to store movies will end with a full disk in no time. On the other hand, programs like Pages, iMovie, iDVD, iTunes and FrontRow, make use of that directory to organize and display movie assets.
Another problem is that not all kind of movies (FLV for example) dropped on Movies directory are recognized by Mac OS X as movies.
So, how can we solve that?
The solution isn’t obvious but you can solve both problems in one shot if you follow these steps:
- Open the remote movie you want to be seen as local in QuickTime;
- Select File ยป Save As and choose the option Save as Reference Movie;
- Save that reference in the Movies directory.
- That’s it! A 4 kilobytes reference file is created on Movies, a kind of link that will point to the real move you have on another machine over the network or on an external disk.
If you have many files to process, use the program Movie2iTunes (freeware). This program is a droplet. Place the program on your desktop and drop onto it all files you want to process. Movie2iTunes is smart enough to process single movies, multiple movies or complex structure of directories containing movies.
