David Pogue (New York Times) confirmed today, what we are saying during these last years in countless books and articles, that the number of pixels per inch (resolution) of a given device is not the more important issue of this equipment.

Last week, David Pogue show to hundreds of people in the streets of New York, three 60×40 cm (23×15 inches) printed images — taken with cameras with 13, 8 and 5 megapixels —, and ask them to point which images have the best quality.

The results, as we expected, were: 95% of people was not able to identify the best image. To them, all images had the same quality.

The truth is that, beyond a certain point, it is impossible to the human eye, to identify an increase in resolution. The same is true for the number of colors in a given image.

As we said in this other post, the most important factor in a camera or scanner is not the resolution. The most important factor is something called dynamic range. That factor is what makes a scanner or camera costs 5 or 50,000 dollars.

As we said before, the most important point in any multimedia production is the content, not the image quality.

The constant search for image quality over content quality inspired me to create the following statement:

In the past, we have created high quality content using low resolution images. Today we are creating low quality content using high resolution images.
